But the simple fact that such killings still take place speaks volumes about Cambodia. Sadly, the likes of Brad Cox have no shortage of subjects to work with.
Next month, American filmmaker Brad Cox will travel from his base in Bangkok to New York, where he will receive a prestigious Peabody Award for a documentary he made on the assassination of the Cambodian trade union leader Chea Vichea in 2004.
Two men – Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun – were charged with the murder, but a confession was later retracted amid claims they were tortured. Both men also had alibis and witnesses who said they were somewhere else at the time of the killing.
Both are widely held to be innocent, but the government insists they got the right people, prompting Cox to produce “Who Killed Chea Vichea?” The movie is banned in Cambodia. Nor is the Cambodian government impressed with the award, claiming Peabody is “a politically motivated” institution, and that Cox’s film is little more than “propaganda.” (The Peabody Awards are the oldest electronic media awards in the world).
But as Cox was having a suit made for the big night, word had filtered through that another prominent environmental activist, Chut Vuthy, had been gunned down after photographing forests in Cambodia’s remote south, which is known for illegal logging.
“He reminds me quite a bit of labor leader Chea Vichea. Both were outspoken, both were willing to stand up for what they believe despite threats and harassment, and both paid the price for their convictions,” Cox said.

The people know the answer but the government is still "investigating". Chea Vichea's brother and the people of Cambodia want Chea Vichea to be recognized as a national hero. That would require a royal decree. The people of Cambodia are still waiting.
The least the government can do is to hand over the investigation to an independent team. It starts with the protection of the key witnesses who were in the car with Chut Wutty when he was killed. It also starts with the doctor who conducted the autopsy. What kind of bullet-it hit the knee and traveled up to the stomach. An expert is needed.

The cold blooded assassination of Chut Wutty is a tragedy and totally deja vu - a repeat of the cold blooded murder of Chea Vichea on 22 January, 2004
Like Chea Vichea, Chut Wutty had a mission. The two men knew the forces they were facing. They were fearless, they looked straight into the eyes of those who wanted them dead.
They both received open threats and knew they would be killed.
They walked tall. Their interests go beyond saving one life.
The government went after them. The government never did much to prosecute those who wanted them dead.
Who killed Chea Vichea?

“This is really the top award that the film could have won.”
Filmmakers examining the 2004 assassination of labor leader Chea Vichea have won a Peabody award for their work.
“Who Killed Chea Vichea” explores Cambodia’s political and security institutions in an indictment of the police and judiciary, which failed to arrest or convict his true killers. The courts instead convicted two men widely believed innocent of the crime.
Some of the film’s claims “remain somewhat ambiguous,” Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards, told VOA Khmer. “But in the end [it] was an important piece of work.”
The filmmakers will receive the award May 21 in New York.

A banned documentary exploring the murder of Chea Vichea, one of Cambodia’s most famous labour leaders, has won one of journalism’s highest plaudits and once again earned the ire of the government. Who Killed Chea Vichea? chronicles the life and death of the Free Trade Union leader, who was gunned down while reading a newspaper outside Wat Langka in 2004.
Bom Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun were eventually tried and convicted for Chea Vichea’s murder. Both men are widely held to be innocent, a contention shared by the documentary.
Last week, Who Killed Chea Vichea? was honoured with a Peabody Award, a prize that recognises distinguished public service in broadcast journalism.
“Inside the US it’s one of the most prestigious awards you can get,” said Bradley Cox, the film’s director. “We were glad that we won.

8th Anniversary of the Assassination of Chea Vichea - the leader of Cambodia's workers' movement.
In my hand, I had copies of http://www.itvs.org/films/who-killed-chea-vichea, an award winning documentary produced by two passionate film makers and activists - the film is banned in Cambodia.
I said: "This documentary holds more than sufficient evidence for the government to make the investigation of Chea Vichea's more real. The killers could be here in the crowd. The Cambodian people can not live in peace till Chea Vichea's killers are behind bars. We hope that we will return to this spot, next year to celebrate justice found for our hero".
I handed a copy to an agent of the Ministry of Interior who was in the crowd asking him to take it to his bosses.
We will continue to pray for Chea Vichea's soul.
We will continue to fight for a clean judiciary in Cambodia.

Who Killed Chea Vichea?
Chea Vichea not only led the workers' movement of Cambodia, he challenged all those in politics in the country that came out of genocide and continues to be governed by one strong man. Chea Vichea accepted nothing less for the workers than their fundamental rights for respect and their right for dignity.
Today mark the 8th year of Chea Vichea's assassination and yet the killers are still free. Cambodians officially may not know the real killers but we have a very clear idea who gave the order.
The real killers will be found the day Cambodia is governed with rule of law.
Remembering 22 January, 2004 keeps the hope for us that justice is real and not just right but an absolute element of freedom.
We will continue to march, we will continue to go to Lanka pagoda where our dear friend was shot at point blank. We will continue to demand justice.
Vote for change in Cambodia.

On the anniversary of union leader Chea Vichea’s death each year, members of Cambodia’s Free Trade Union defy government orders and march to the site of his assassination in 2004 to lay wreaths in his honour.
The same orders have come this year, but for the first time, the union has listened and agreed not to march.
The reason, FTU president Chea Mony said, has nothing to do with Prime Minister Hun Sen’s decision last week to approve the building of a statue to the fallen union leader, but is because the January 22 anniversary coincides with senate elections campaigning.
