Mam Sonando, president of the Democrat Association and director of the Beehive 105 FM radio station, was arrested by the cops on 15 July at about 9AM.
Mrs. Din Phanara, Mam Sonando’s wife, indicated that about 20 cops – some in civilian and some in police uniforms – entered the Beehive office located in Thnot Chrum village, Boeung Tumpun commune, Meanchey district, Phnom Penh city and they proceeded to arrest her husband.
Khieu Sopheak, the mouthpiece of the Ministry of Interior (MoI), indicated on 15 July that Mam Sonando was arrested by the authority at around 9AM on 15 July, following an order issued by Chok Nguon, the investigating judge of the Kratie provincial court.
Khieu Sopheak added that the arrest of Mam Sonando was made based on 4 accusations: (1) Fomenting ideas to oppose public officials; (2) Insurrection; (3) Illegal interference into public duty work; and (4) Inciting people to hold arm to oppose the legal authority.
In response to these accusations, Din Phanara claimed that her husband did not commit any of them as he was accused by the investigating judge of the Kratie provincial court. She said that if the court is independent, her husband would not be charged with any of these accusations. Nevertheless, she indicated that, as of 15 July, she already found a lawyer to defend her husband.
Sok Sam Oeun, Mam Sonando’s defense lawyer, said that he agreed to defend Mam Sonando, but that he did not have time to review his case yet and he did not received the court official accusation yet. Therefore, he cannot talk about the case right away.
Regarding this arrest, Chok Nguon, the investigating judge of the Kratie provincial court, claimed that he did issue the arrest order and the case will be transferred to the Phnom Penh court. Therefore, the case is no longer under the jurisdiction of the Kratie court anymore.
Nevertheless, Chan Soveth, the vice-director of investigation of the Adhoc human rights group, called and asked for the government to clearly confirm the reason of Mam Sonando’s arrest. He added that the government’s action regarding the arrest order against the president of the Democrat Association will not be beneficial to the government. Quite to the contrary, this action will show to the national and international communities that democracy in Cambodia is in fact moving backward.
Mam Sonando recently traveled to the US and Switzerland and he returned back to Cambodia on 12 July 2012. On 14 July, he celebrated the 2nd anniversary of the formation of the Democrat Association where he declared that he was not afraid of being arrested by the authority.
On 26 June, Hun Xen announced that the authority must arrest the president of the Democrat Association who is the instigator of illegal land grabbing in Kampong Damrey commune, Chhlong district, Kratie province. Hun Xen said that the president of the Democrat Association is responsible for the death of a teenager killed by armed government soldiers who raided the illegal land grabbing operation in Kratie province.

what hun sen accuse Mr Mam doesn't make any sense at all. what a crazy democratic politic in such a beautiful country of our. I hope justice can be done. I pray that the real criminal of all time for 30 yrs can bring to the international court one day for the dirty crimes he/they committed.
The law system in this country to make the real criminals and traitors to be free and the real innocences as the criminals and traitors.
I am voicing to all khmer in srok khmer or overseas abroad. I am calling for all khmer people through out the world to voice your supports for Mr. Mam Sonando for being arrested without probable causes and injustice for the first person to help cheat khmer old to rich that this is wrong by the Phnom Penh Government. Mr. Hun Sen, you need to really open your eyes wide and see that Mr. Mam Sonando is no threat to you or your army. He has no ARMS. So you are arresting the peace person who is working really hard to help his own people when the PHNOM PENH Government failed to perform their duty. ALL KHMER NEEDS TO COME TOGETHER AS ONE AND NOT BREAKING EACH OTHER. LIKE ONE HAS SAID ONE CHOPSTICK IS BREAKABLE BUT YOU CAN NOT BREAK A BUNDLE OF CHOPSTICK. I AM VERY UPSET AND DISAPPOINTED WITH HIS RECENT ARRESTED. ALL KHMER NEEDS TO WAKE UP FROM BEING AFRAID OF DYING AND GO TO THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY AND SHOW STRONG FORCES OF PROTEST IN PHNOM PENH...ESP. THE KHMER PEOPLE IN SROK KHMER. AND EVERYWHERE THROUGH OUT THE WORLD. KHMER MUST NOT FALL UNDER ANY RULERS OF FOREIGNER OCCUPATION LIKE YOU SEE IN LAOS.
