The trio at the head of Cambodia’s newly merged opposition party is heading to Washington early next month to talk with unnamed US Congressional and State Department officials about bringing their absentee leader, Sam Rainsy, back to take part in the 2013 national elections.
“The question is, will the US accept a government that does not respect the will of the people?” asked opposition parliamentarian Mu Sochua in an interview yesterday, implicitly referring to the ruling Cambodian People’s Party.
Sochua is aligned with the new Cambodian Democratic Movement for National Rescue, a union forged in Manila this month between the Human Rights Party and the Sam Rainsy Party.
The US is seen as a country that can effect human-rights change in Cambodia – at least in the eyes of the 13 Boeung Kak women released on June 27 after being sentenced in May to two and a half years in prison.
They believe talks US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had with Foreign Minister Hor Namhong in Washington helped secure their freedom.
Travelling with Sochua to Washington from August 7 to 15 are Rainsy and Human Rights Party head Khem Sokha.
US Embassy spokesman Sean McIntosh confirmed that Sochua met with embassy Chargé d’Affaires Jeff Daigle on Monday to discuss the national elections in Cambodia and that the embassy is helping to arrange meetings in the capital.
Whether she and top members of the Cambodian Democratic Movement for National Rescue will have any luck there is another matter.
Sochua declined to answer questions about what-if scenarios should Rainsy fail to return and campaign in elections next year.
When asked if Sokha could lead the party, she said the HRP head “is very clear in his heart and his mind that his energy will be for the return of Sam Rainsy. And Mr Sam Rainsy will be a candidate for the premiership”.
Sokha didn’t seem to disagree. “This meeting, we will tell them that we have already merged because they want to see us joining hands with Sam Rainsy,” Sokha said.
A spokesman for the CPP said foreigners cannot interfere in Cambodian sovereignty because the government has been elected by the people.

We care only about Cambodia and Cambodians.
The US never have the courage to bark againth the Viets since 1975 .They have to please the viets by supporting the CPP.
They have ever for ever forgot the right of the khmer people to live as the master of their land in vietnam.
why sam rainsy kept do something wrong in camobdia then ran away to hide overseas? why? that is why people don't like him for his weakness political strategy, you know. i cannot vote for sam rainy for hurting and bashing cambodia for a living all the time, you know. next time, he'll do something else wrong and then runs away again and again. where is the ethics and professionalism in this, really! sam rainsy should be talking about how to develop cambodia, how to reform social development, how to reconstruct cambodia, etc, instead, he only focus on his youn paranoia, his hate, his bias, his prejudice and his discrimination and his primitive, racist way by bashing cambodia nonstop. how can anyone in their right mind still vote for this him for his own failure and his incompetency and his own ineffectiveness, outdated system like this, really! he is no good to be my leader in cambodia,really!
the US could understand that it is up to the majority of khmer people to vote for and elect their good, competent, effective, strong leader, not up to the few opposition, unruly, run away, duel citizen, weak, outdated thinking, self-proclaimed leaders, you know. maybe some of them out of the bunch is good; however, most of them are really ineffective, incompetent, outdated, bias, prejudice, discriminatory, primitive and ignorant. and it is up to the educated, smart, clever, wise, enlightened khmer public to choose their good leaders, not up to someone else who are not khmer citizens, etc, really. please don't forget this about cambodia, cambodia is cambodia, not vietnam/youn nor thailand/siem nor something else, really. educated, competent, smart, clever, wise, enlighted, learned, strong khmer people will pick their qualified leader(s), ok. thank you and may god bless my country cambodia always.

Hey 12:03 AM, I think you're dead wrong re. China supported S. Rainsy.
If you said so, why China pumps millions of dollars to CPP right now?
If you don't like S. Rainsy, is like you hate poor Cambodian farmers. unlike CPP party always support rich people. The US, they want to promote democracy not communist like CPP who always side with Vietnam and China. I know because back in 1970, Lon Nol is back the US, that's the fact.
I have no feedback for others comment, but I knew one thing, Sam Rainsi is not a qualified leader. As a leader, he should have been aware of his opposition, especially, in hot rock Cambodia. Why he led civilians to protest at Vietnamese border and finally run away which allowed Hun Sen accused and trown them in jail at the same time. Good leader would have managed to where his or her followers would be safe, plan ahead. I dont trust him and he is not a good fit as PM of Cambodia. You all will see Hun Sen party will claim victory once again and root deeper that noone candidate will succeed his party. Sam is hypocrypt.
