KATHMANDU: United Nations Human Rights Envoy to
Cambodia Professor Surya P Subedi has received widespread international support,
including from US President Barack Obama in his dealings with the Cambodian
government.
During his Cambodia visit in November to attend the
US-ASEAN summit meeting in Phnom Penh, President Obama called Cambodia’s lack
of respect for fundamental freedoms an ‘impediment’ to a deeper relation
between the two countries. He went on to say countries that do not uphold
certain universal principles, such as respect for human rights, will have
difficulty integrating with the international community.
Last week, the State Department in a letter sent on
behalf of President Obama to a group of leading US Senators expressed concern
about the situation of human rights in Cambodia. It stated that the US had
called on the Cambodian government to pay heed to the recommendations of Prof
Subedi.
Subedi, a Nepali by origin and a law professor at the
Leeds University, UK, has been serving as the UN Human Rights Rapporteur for
four years. He has already submitted four reports, voicing for sweeping reforms
to ensure the independence of judiciary and free and fair elections in
Cambodia.
Prof Subedi has receivedcriticism from Cambodian Prime
Minister Hun Sen. Censuring Prof Subedi, Sen said the professor better keep his
idea to Nepal, his home country’s political mess rather than lecturing on
Cambodia’s human rights record.
In a letter to THT, Subedi mentioned that European
Parliament, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Senates of Australia, and the
Philippines have passed resolutions calling on the Cambodian Government to implement
the recommendations made by him. In the letter, he also mentioned that the
Cambodian main opposition party leader is in exile in Paris as he faces long
prison sentence if he were to return to Phnom Penh.
Likewise, the owner and director of an independent
radio station, Beehive, Mam Sonando, was sent to 20-year prison sentence
recently. Subedi had gone to meet him in prison at the outskirts of Phnom Penh
during his recent mission to Cambodia.

All of the talk but no action. Keep doing the same old thing, and no one pays no attention. Then you UN is irrelevant to average Cambodians.
Bad human right record in Cambodia is due to failure of the UN to implement
the 23 October , 1991 Paris agreement . UN fail to disarm Hun Sen' s faction
which led to the 1997 Coup d'Etat . Since then Hun Sen has made sure that
his opponents are weak or dead . It is the UN responsibility to force Hun Sen
to comply , not just talk to the Wild Animal .
The UN is not our parents, so if the guy in charge for Cambodia doesn't give a shit about it's own people, nobody will. You have to help yourself first before anybody else can.
In this case, it's Ah king Chhkout faults, he kicked the UN out of Cambodia so he could get credit for gaining independence from the UN, just like he did from the french in the 1950s.
The bottom line is - Ah king chhkout and Ah Hun Shit only listen to China and Vietcong.
Wow, after read both comments on 5:34 AM and 6:17 AM, in my opinion you both have concrete points and I agreed on both. Yes, you're absolutely right that we should be in charge of ourselves, but "ourselves" (which was brainwash then installed) is heavily influents and controlled by the Hanoi.
So, with that said, do you think that maybe it is difficult for the UN to step in?
Siding with China,to prevent further invading of Vietnam to Cambodia was relevant but pushing away the UN at that time persuaded by Vietnam into Cpp was the ultimate mistake calculated agreement by the ex-king father. The impact is so detrimental to Cambodia. Vietnam will always try to enforce on treaty signed by CPP,Hun Sen, and manoeuvred with additional treaties to achieve its invasion.
Please keep calm but urge the UNand countries signed to peace. Agreement for current resolution. The signatories countries have obligation to participate and push any Cambodian government to comply with the treaty in Paris.
All compatriots, please do not stop working closely with NGOs and international human rights to achieve the sensible outcome.

I agreed with this idea. We have to keep working and pushing the UN, the international communities, NGO and
Human Rights to act strongly everyday
don't disappoint and give up.
