Britons jailed for Cambodia child sex offences

11 March 2011
BBC News
"Any offender who thinks they can visit places such as Cambodia and target young, vulnerable children for sexual gratification should think again" - Peter Davies
Two British men have been sent to prison in Cambodia in separate cases for child sex offences.

Matthew Harland, 38, who jumped bail in Hampshire in 2005, will serve seven years.

Nicholas Griffin, 53, of Llangollen, Denbighshire, who ran orphanages, was jailed for two years for sexually assaulting several victims in his care.

The UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) worked on both cases with Cambodian police.

CEOP sent officers to the Asian country after a request from the Cambodian National Police.

'America’s Most Wanted' and Irish cop team up in pedophile hunt

Former top officer and John Walsh hit Cambodia

Jim Gamble, the former head of the Northern Irish Police Special Branch posed as a pedophile to investigate the sex trafficking of Cambodian children, for the American TV show “America’s Most Wanted”.

Gamble, the ex-chief executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) and "America's Most Wanted" host, John Walsh were "heartbroken and disgusted" when they witnessed a Cambodian bar that hosted between 50 to 60 girls.

Appearing on "America's Most Wanted", which is broadcast on Saturday nights, the shocking scenes that unfold show just how easy it is to pay for sex with an underage girl.

Within two minutes of entering a Cambodian brothel, a madam approached Gamble to ask what he was looking for? When he replied young girls she brought over three or four girls that were estimated to be about 12 or 13 years old.

Playing along however Gamble told her they wanted younger girls. The madam replied: “What do you want? We have six and seven-year-old boys and girls. I can arrange that off-premises.”

Western pedophiles from the United States, Britain and Germany are now known to be traveling east to Cambodia as international sex tourists. They choose Cambodia, Gamble told the press, because it was cheap to buy a sex slave there.

Walsh said "I saw many Western men that had gone there, not to go to the Buddhist temples, not to go to look at beaches, not to do anything at all but to molest and have sex with children. It's wrong, it's illegal and it has to change.”

The resultant TV episode is being described as a tough show to watch but Gamble insists it's crucial to expose the reality that children are being sexually assaulted by predators, many of whom were from the US.

Police say Australian arrested for child sex in Cambodia

March 20, 2010

CAMBODIAN police have arrested an Australian man on suspicion of paying for sex with underage girls over a number of years.

The suspect, identified by police as Michael John Lines, 52, was arrested yesterday. Police allege he has been having sex with two girls, now 17.

Major General Bith Kimhong, director of the Interior Ministry's anti-trafficking unit, today said one of the alleged victims was now the man's fiancee.

Bith Kimhong added that police suspected he had abused many children and that he had "been committing the offences for four years".

He said the man would appear at Phnom Penh Municipal Court later today to be charged with "buying sex from children".

Dozens of foreigners have been jailed for child sex crimes or deported to face trial in their home countries since Cambodia launched an anti-pedophilia push in 2003, to try to shake off its reputation as a haven for sex predators.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the arrest.

"The Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh is aware of the arrest of a 52-year-old Queensland man on suspicion of child sex offences," a DFAT spokesperson said.

"The Australian Embassy is providing the man with consular assistance."

Aussie found dead in Cambodian jail cell

03 May 2008
DPA

An Australian national has been found dead in his Cambodian jail cell, officials and family said.

Bart "Lucky" Lauwaert, a former teacher, had been serving a 20-year sentence for child sex offences in a case which was spearheaded by local rights group, the Cambodian Women's Crisis Centre (CWCC).

In a phone interview from Siem Reap prison, 400 kilometres north of the capital, after his last avenue of appeal was closed last month, Lauwaert again alleged he had been "set up" by people trying to garner donor aid from high profile arrests and threatened suicide.

A prison official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lauwaert had not been on suicide watch and no formal cause of death had been established, although heart failure had not been ruled out.

Lauwaert, 41, was arrested with fellow Australian Clinton Rex Betterridge in 2002 and the pair was charged with molesting more than a dozen Cambodian girls aged under 15 in Siem Reap town.

The case became controversial in 2006 when all the girls who had originally testified against the men in Siem Reap court recanted in the Cambodian Appeals Court, claiming they were promised financial rewards by the CWCC for their testimony.

The CWCC said the girls had been coerced by a paedophile ring, but despite his 10-year sentence being upheld in absentia, Betterridge was released the same day from an Australian jail where he had been held since jumping bail and fleeing Cambodia.

Then-Australian Justice Minister Chris Ellison also ordered a full investigation into any Australian aid supplied to the CWCC.

The CWCC strenuously denies any wrongdoing, pointing to continued funding from highly reputable donors including America's USAid and a decade-long record dotted with awards and accolades.

A former Siem Reap judge, Tan Senarong, has publicly admitted his sister works for the CWCC Siem Reap, but denies she works in any area of the organisation where a conflict of interest could arise.

One final foreigner remains in jail from a CWCC spearheaded investigation. New Zealand national Graham Robert Cleghorn has also claimed he was set up by powerful interests wanting his valuable land in Siem Reap, which has been sold since his 2004 arrest.

He is also in poor health, according to his family and a doctor's report, and has also threatened suicide if his appeals fail.

The CWCC founder and director in charge when the foreign men were arrested, Oung Chanthol, resigned last year citing fatigue over the controversy and a need to spend more time with her children.
