Cambodia Expels Russian Pedophile

Alexander Trofimov seen with young girls in Cambodia
Pardoned by the king, the Russian businessman was later found living with an underage girl.

Radio Free Asia

Cambodian authorities moved Thursday night to deport a Russian businessman convicted of sexually abusing more than a dozen Cambodian girls and later pardoned by the country’s king.

Alexander Trofimov, also known as Stanislav Molodyakov, was scheduled to be put on a plane at 11:00 p.m. Cambodia time and deported to Russia, where he is wanted on additional charges of rape.

Speaking to RFA, Cambodian Ministry of Interior spokesman Khieu Sopheak said that the Russian embassy in Cambodia had completed their share of the paperwork related to Trofimov’s return to Russia.

“They already confirmed that they have the paperwork,” he said.

“The documents show that [Trofimov] will be deported to Russia and will not be allowed to return.”

Talking to the Trees - trailer

http://vimeo.com/40450799

Synopsis: A middle-class Parisian woman embarks on a quest to rescue the child her husband has abused from a Cambodian brothel and return her to her family in the jungle.
Mia (Ilaria Borrelli) a beautiful and successful Paris based photographer, bored by her bourgeois existence, flies out to Cambodia to surprise her timber trader husband Xavier (Philippe Caroit) in order for them to create the baby she longs for.

On arrival, Mia misses Xavier at the hotel. Seeing him being driven down the road, she quickly follows. But her hope for a romantic welcome are dashed when she finds herself in seedy part of town and spies her husband in a brothel having sex with an eleven year-old girl, Srey. Stunned, Mia collapses in a state of shock.

Mia, her world now turned upside down, resolves to rescue Srey and return her to her remote village and the family from whom she was abducted. With insufficient cash to buy Srey’s freedom, Mia strikes a repulsive bargain with Sanan the brothel owner and sacrifices her own body to the General, Sanan’s high-powered client, in order to liberate the little girl.

The Local (Switzerland)

An 81-year-old Swiss former magnet therapist has been arrested in Cambodia for the third time for sexually abusing children.

The man, known only as Hugo L, comes from Spreitenbach in canton Aargau. He has been arrested three times over the past year and a half for having sex with children, online news website Blick reported.

The octogenarian was first arrested in September 2010 in Pattaya, Thailand, when he was charged with having oral sex with 12-year-olds. Just a few months later, he was arrested on Christmas Eve in Cambodia, for having abused four boys aged between 11 and 13.

Hugo L then served six months of a ten-month sentence in a Cambodian jail. He was banned from ever setting foot in Cambodia again.

Pardoned pedophiles still roam free despite petition

The child-protection groups that petitioned Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Kheng last month to have convicted pedophile Alexander Trofimov deported following his controversial release from prison are still waiting for a decision, the director of one of the 14 national and international NGOs that signed the petition said yesterday.

Samleang Seila, director of Action Pour les Enfants, said he believed that the deputy premier will eventually deport the Russian national, whose release from Preah Sihanouk provincial prison via a royal pardon on December 20 sparked outrage.

“I believe the government will deport Trofimov into police custody in Russia, although the process is quite slow,” he told the Post. The petition was sent to the deputy premier’s office on December 30 and about one week later it was forwarded to the Cambodian National Police for advice, Samleang Seila said, adding that the police had returned it to Sar Kheng last week with their advice.

Serial pedophile Alexander Trofimov’s whereabouts remain a matter of speculation or denial, with provincial police in Preah Sihanouk saying they lost track of him the day after Christmas, national police saying they are not even looking for him, border police requesting photographs and government spokesmen either saying they know nothing or offering hunches.

Ministry of Interior spokesman Khieu Sopheak told the Post yesterday that he did not know whether the recently released Russian national – who is wanted in his home country for alleged sex crimes against six girls aged nine and 10 – was still in Cambodia or had left for another country.

I am not sure about Trofimov’s whereabouts. He may be in the country or out of the country. We have searched for Trofimov’s name [on records at immigration checkpoints], but it has not shown up,” he said.

[Trofimov] raped girls as young as nine there
A third foreign pedophile – a Dutch national who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sex crimes against six boys in 2005 – was released from prison last week after receiving a royal pardon.

Prey Sar prison director Sun Lean said yesterday Rene Paul Martin Aubel had left the prison in Phnom Penh on December 23 after being pardoned.

The early release of three foreign pedophiles in one week was not a coincidence, Seila Samleang, country director of the NGO Action Pour Les Enfants, said.

It marked the first time such pardons had been used to gain early release for foreign pedophiles, and now that this avenue had been opened, it would probably be exploited more frequently, he said.

Release of Russian tycoon is for national interest: Hun Xen’s government

25 Dec 2011
By Chun Chanbotr and Yun Samean
RFA
Translated from Khmer by Soch

On Saturday 24 Dec, Phay Siphan, the mouthpiece of the Council of Ministers, claimed that the request to the king to release Alxander Trofimov, the Russian tycoon, was done for national interest (sic!). Phay Siphan said that the release of Trofimov was not done in exchange for development of Koh Pous Island in Sihanoukville. “First of all, his sentence was completed. He was completed one portion of his jail sentence already… Therefore, the portion of the sentence is another story, but it will clearly bring good outcome, this is why the government asked for the king to pardon him,” Phay Siphan said. This is the first time that a government official reply to criticisms against the release of Trofimov.

Somnieng Sila, director of the “Action pour Les Enfants” NGO, said : “This sex act included buying somebody etc…, therefore it is an immoral action and it greatly affects the customs of our country. Furthermore, since he [Alexander Trofimov] is rich, when the sentence is lessened too much, it could also affect the justice system in the future. The public thinks that, because he is rich, this is why the [sentence] is lessened like this. Therefore, it does not look good, even if the release is done according to the law.

Frenchman jailed 6 years for Cambodian child porn

2011-06-21
Associated Press

A Cambodian court has sentenced a Frenchman to six years in prison for taking pornographic photographs of eight girls.

Judge Sin Visal of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced Mathias Cassar, 35, after the court found him guilty last week of taking photos of eight girls aged 5-13 for sale.

Cassar, who was arrested in March, was also ordered to pay $1,000 in compensation to each victim. His Cambodian girlfriend, Doung Davy, 30, was also sentenced to six years on the same charges.

Conversations with a sex worker [-The sordid story of a disgusting French pedophile]

June 11, 2011
Aneesa Alphonsu
Free Malaysia Today

A young Cambodian relates the appalling events that led her into prostitution.

It was the sort of day that made you want to really seize all opportunities. There was a beautiful blue sky dotted with white wisps of clouds and the kind of sun benevolent enough not to burn your skin. It was 8am in Cambodia and the adventure at hand was a trip through Angkor Archaeological Park. My guide? A 22-year-old sex worker named Samnang, the Cambodian word for Good Fortune.

“You can call me Sam,” she said, smiling shyly.

I had met Sam two days earlier, by accident, when I got lost meandering through the streets of Siem Reap. At first, she tried giving me directions, but when I failed to comprehend, mostly because I’m not good with maps, Sam offered to walk me back to where I was staying during my week-long visit.

When we arrived, I asked Sam to have dinner with me, but she declined, saying she had to work. When I asked what she worked as, she explained in halting English that she was a sex worker. I tried to sound casual, telling her why I was in Cambodia and that I was looking for someone who could show me around. I asked if she would be interested.

Cambodia paedophile Nick Griffin accused of raping boy while working in Wales

Mar 20 2011
By Darren Devine
Wales On Sunday

PAEDOPHILE Nick Griffin, who used a Cambodian orphanage as a front for his sick urges, repeatedly raped a young boy while running a Scout group in North Wales, it was claimed today.

His alleged victim, now aged 23, told Wales on Sunday that Griffin – jailed earlier this month after being convicted of abusing children – attacked him over a two year period.

His shocking accusation – which is now being investigated by police – came as those who worked with the Griffin in Cambodia revealed they raised concerns about his relationship with young boys long before his arrest but were not heeded by authorities there.

Griffin, 53, was finally unmasked as a sex monster only last week when he was convicted of abusing young boys in the Cambodian orphanage he set up and ran for five years. He was jailed for two years for offences against children.

We warned authorities about Nick Griffin, volunteers say

Wales On Sunday

CHARITY volunteers who worked with Nick Griffin in Cambodia told Wales on Sunday of the disturbing behaviour they witnessed.

Griffin abused boys under the age of 15 at the orphanage he set up in Siem Reap but was only convicted last week – five years after he founded the institution.

Staff who worked alongside Griffin complained about him first in 2008 but the complaints were never proven and it was not until last year that he was arrested.

Sally Sayer, regional director of Volunteer Project Overseas, lives in Siem Reap and said she had become concerned about 53-year-old Griffin and the orphanage more than a year ago.

The US agents tracking down sex tourists in Cambodia

US agents rely on locals to provide information about suspect Americans
Agent Vansak Suos was once a conscripted boy soldier in Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge army

By David Henshaw
BBC News

As part of an initiative to protect children from sexual predators, including those who travel overseas, special US agents operating in South East Asia have brought more than 80 alleged child sex tourists back to America to face justice.

Sihanoukville looks like paradise, or at least a decent, low-rent version. Golden beaches, swaying palm trees, cheap alcohol and shimmering sea.

Retired American pharmacist Ronald Adams had come here for the good life - setting up a beachside cafe. But one morning last February Adams' personal vision of paradise was shattered, when officers from the Cambodian National Police raided his apartment.

They found a collection of sex aids, child pornography on DVDs and a variety of illegal drugs. Adams was accused of drugging and raping a 12-year-old girl.

English teacher gets 9 years for sex with Cambodian teen

Mon Dec 20, 2010
By Alex Dobuzinskis

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A former English teacher was sentenced to nearly nine years in prison on Monday for traveling to Cambodia to have sex with a 14 year-old girl in what the judge called one of the "most disgusting cases" he had ever heard.

Prosecutors say Michael James Dodd, 61, admitted to sexually abusing the girl over an eight-month period in 2008 during which he paid her impoverished family $100 a month for private visits with her.

Dodd, a U.S. citizen, was then working in Phnom Penh as an English teacher.

U.S. District Judge John F. Walter expressed reluctance to approve the prison term of eight years and eight months sought by prosecutors under a plea deal with Dodd, indicating he thought the sentence was too lenient for the crime.

"I may live to regret this," the judge said, adding that he had no doubt that when Dodd is released from prison "he's going to do this again."

"This is one of the most disgusting cases that has ever come before this court," he said. He called Dodd a "cunning, clever and manipulative predator."

But imposing the maximum possible sentence of 30 years in prison would have required a jury conviction, and the Cambodian victim would have been expected to travel to the United States to testify against Dodd. Walter said he was unwilling to force her to suffer that ordeal.

Dodd pleaded guilty in September to traveling to Cambodia to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

He previously served more than four years in prison in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, where in 2002 he was convicted of inappropriately touching underage girls. Dodd was working at an elementary school at the time.

After his release from prison there, Dodd traveled to Cambodia in 2007 to begin teaching there. Prosecutors say there is evidence that he abused other minors in Cambodia aside from the 14 year-old girl.

Cambodian police arrested Dodd in October 2008, after they investigated his relationship with the girl, and he served 16 months in jail in that country before authorities revoked his visa and expelled him.

FBI agents escorted Dodd back to the United States.

The bespectacled Dodd was soft-spoken during his Monday court appearance, and he thanked his lawyers for treating him like a "brother or a dad." He then tried to engage the judge in conversation.

"I have no desire to sit here and engage in idle chit-chat and banter with you," Walter said.

US man jailed for child sex tourism in Cambodia

Michael Dodd (right)
Los Angeles, Dec 21 (IANS) A 61-year-old American man has been jailed for being involved in child sex tourism in Cambodia, after he pleaded guilty to having sex with a teenage girl whom he 'rented' from her poor family for $100 a month.

Michael James Dodd, an English teacher, was also ordered by Judge John F. Walter to pay $9,500 in compensation and serve 10 years of supervised release.

Dodd pleaded guilty to travelling to Cambodia to engage in sex with a minor.

He was previously arrested in 2001 in the Northern Mariana Islands near Guam for inappropriately touching 13 underage female students at an elementary school where he worked, Xinhua reported citing the US Attorney's Office.

After serving time there he moved to Cambodia, where he taught English to students between the ages of 13 and 45, said Steven M. Martinez, FBI assistant director in charge.

He was arrested by Cambodian authorities in 2008 for the sexual activities he was carrying out with the 14-year-old, Martinez said.

Dodd was convicted in a Cambodian court of sexually abusing the girl and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. After serving only 16 months, he was brought back to the US in February.

The accused admitted to having sexual relations on 25 occasions with a minor and paying the Cambodian girl's destitute family $50 every two weeks so that he could eventually marry the girl.

Dodd also admitted having paying other children for sex in Cambodia, prosecutors said.

Journalists Reveal Horrors of Treatment of Women

Srey Rath, a 15 year old Cambodian girl, wanted to earn money for her family by washing dishes in Thailand. Instead, the man who promised her the job sold her into a brothel, where fighting back just meant more beatings and rape.

Woineshet Zebene, a 13 year old girl from Ethiopia, was peacefully sleeping in her hut, when four men stormed in and kidnapped her. Battering and raping went on for two days until she finally escaped. Upon her return to the village, she was expected to marry one of her rapists, Aberew Jemma.

Dina, a 17 year old from Kindu, Congo, was returning home from her farm, when five militia men surrounded her. They told her, if she screamed, she will be dead. All five of them, one after the other raped her. When she was pinned down, one of the men forced a stick inside her.

What do all of these stories have in common? Oppression of women.

Whether it’s a mother killing her baby girl because she believes girls are unlucky, or a militia man thinking that he has the right to rape any woman he desires, tyranny towards females exists. The trick is not to only change the law, but to change people’s points of view through education.

Nicholas D. Kristof, NY Times journalist and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, former NY Times journalist and editor, portray in their new nonfiction book, Half the Sky, how, if given the opportunity, women can shine even in the darkest corners of life.

The title is part of an ancient Chinese proverb: Women hold up half the sky. I’m guessing the other half lies on the shoulders of men. When either side falls, it’s harder for those who are still standing. Just like the 13 colonies – ‘United we stand, divided we fall’.

The shock of statistics in each chapter is personalized with an individual story giving the whole book a more humane feeling. Photographs of women and girls throughout the book make reading their life trials feel as though they are right beside me.

Kristof compares oppression of women to slavery. Just like there was a beginning for equality with the Emancipation Proclamation, this could possibly be the beginning for emancipating women and girls worldwide. The quote in chapter two in Half the Sky cleverly analyzes slavery. “Although volume upon volume is written to prove slavery a very good thing, we never hear of the man who wishes to take the good of it, by being a slave himself,” said Abraham Lincoln.

Kristof came into a brothel in western Cambodia and pretended he was a customer. The woman pimp sold him a girl, Srey Neth, for $150 and gave him a receipt. What shocked me the most was when I realized over the weekend I found this amazing pair of shoes for $145, which I didn’t purchase. If I bought them I would have my shoes and a receipt, and Kristof bought a human being for almost the same price and has a receipt. I can’t wrap my head around the idea that I can buy a woman for $150 and own her.

Of course Kristof bought Srey Neth and another girl, Srey Momm, for $203 only so they can go back to their families. Unfortunately, buying them is the easy part. Because girls are usually dependent on drugs that pimps give them, they return to the brothels voluntarily..

Compared to the prenatal care in the U.S., where practically every inch is though out and planned even before the pregnancy, for many women in Africa becoming pregnant is a death sentence. One woman dies of childbirth around the world every minute.

Every person should read this book. It’s not only inspiring but also real because while reading I wanted some parts to be surreal. All these women, who survived rape, beatings, acid burns, fistulas, and more, and are still able to not give up and turn their horrific experience into strength - truly hold up half the sky.

'America’s Most Wanted' and Irish cop team up in pedophile hunt

Former top officer and John Walsh hit Cambodia

Jim Gamble, the former head of the Northern Irish Police Special Branch posed as a pedophile to investigate the sex trafficking of Cambodian children, for the American TV show “America’s Most Wanted”.

Gamble, the ex-chief executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) and "America's Most Wanted" host, John Walsh were "heartbroken and disgusted" when they witnessed a Cambodian bar that hosted between 50 to 60 girls.

Appearing on "America's Most Wanted", which is broadcast on Saturday nights, the shocking scenes that unfold show just how easy it is to pay for sex with an underage girl.

Within two minutes of entering a Cambodian brothel, a madam approached Gamble to ask what he was looking for? When he replied young girls she brought over three or four girls that were estimated to be about 12 or 13 years old.

Playing along however Gamble told her they wanted younger girls. The madam replied: “What do you want? We have six and seven-year-old boys and girls. I can arrange that off-premises.”

Western pedophiles from the United States, Britain and Germany are now known to be traveling east to Cambodia as international sex tourists. They choose Cambodia, Gamble told the press, because it was cheap to buy a sex slave there.

Walsh said "I saw many Western men that had gone there, not to go to the Buddhist temples, not to go to look at beaches, not to do anything at all but to molest and have sex with children. It's wrong, it's illegal and it has to change.”

The resultant TV episode is being described as a tough show to watch but Gamble insists it's crucial to expose the reality that children are being sexually assaulted by predators, many of whom were from the US.

Norwegian jailed in Cambodia on child sex charges

SIEM REAP, Cambodia — A Cambodian court on Tuesday jailed a 63-year-old Norwegian man for 18 months on charges of paying for sex with a teenage boy in Siem Reap, the country's northwestern tourist hub.

Sletten Rolf was arrested in January in the province -- home to the famed Angkor Wat temples -- for soliciting paid sex with a 16-year-old boy in 2009.

The provincial court sentenced Rolf to three years in prison, but ordered half the term to be suspended. Cambodia's age of consent is 15 but all payment for sex is illegal.

Cambodia has struggled to shed its reputation as a haven for paedophiles, putting dozens of foreigners in jail for child sex crimes or deporting them to face trial in their home countries since 2003.
