EU crisis to hit tourism again

The World Bank yesterday said developing countries should brace for a long period of volatility in global markets, which could impact tourism-reliant nations such as Cambodia.

A “serious deterioration of conditions” remained a possibility in Europe, according to the bank's Global Economic Prospects, although slow improvement was a likely outcome for the bloc.

The turmoil, which has been magnified recently by a Spanish bank bailout and the possibility of Greece's withdrawal from the eurozone, could further tighten the purse strings of European travelers.

Gauging Cambodia's market for European travelers has been difficult since numbers declined significantly during the onset of the global crisis in 2009, said Pierre Jungo, managing director of Diethelm Travel, a regional travel agency that caters largely to Europe.

Dear compatriots and friends,

We have less than 3 months before the upcoming third commune election. We re-launching our appeal for financial support for the Sam Rainsy Party which represents the only hope for the Khmer Nation. The SRP is the one and only network of democratic activists and human rights that extends deep inside the entire country and it is the only party that will rid Cambodia of the communist mafia regime supported by the Hanoi regime.

Among the three attachments below, you will find one prepared by the UNDP in 2007 which shows that the number of votes received by the SRP is steadily increasing. As the saying goes, "little by little, the bird builds its nest," democracy is not easy to build, but its results will last forever.

Thank you very much for your precious supports.

Cambodia's economy may grow 8.7pc this year

Monday, 12 September 2011
Reuters

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia's economy can grow as much as 8.7 percent this year, its strongest in a decade, propelled by a resurgence in its garments and tourism industries, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday.

The Cambodia government's official estimate for economic growth in 2011 is 6 percent, but Hun Sen said that could be topped by a wide margin.

"There is a possibility of higher growth of 8.7 percent," Hun Sen told a graduation ceremony at a university in the capital Phnom Penh, agreeing with an estimate by a local think-tank, the Economic Institute of Cambodia (EIC).

Hun Sen, however, cautioned that "unclear economic situations in the US and Europe" will affect the country and that Cambodia should diversify its economy into other sectors such as agriculture and mining.

China has 'confidence' in the euro despite crisis

Thursday, August 04, 2011
AFP

BEIJING — China said Wednesday it remained confident in the euro despite the deepening debt crisis and considered the European financial market as one of its "primary investment destinations".

The comments by foreign minister Yang Jiechi came after Beijing signalled it would further diversify its massive foreign exchange holdings away from the dollar after the US government pushed through a deal to borrow more money.

"China has always maintained confidence in the euro zone and the euro and treated the European financial market as one of its primary investment destinations," Yang told journalists during a trip to Albania.

"China believes that a prosperous and stable Europe is important for world stability and development," Yang said, according to a statement posted on the foreign ministry website.

Revealed: the bitter taste of Cambodia’s sugar boom

CPP Land-thief Ly Yong Phat
Protest against Ly Yong Phat's land-grabbing in Kampong Speu
13th April, 2011
Sam Campbell
TheEcologist.org
‘The Koh Kong plantation illegally encroached on the land of hundreds of families, many of whom have been forcibly evicted, dispossessed and driven into destitution during the last four years. The European Union, meanwhile, is subsidising these human rights abuses by allowing the perpetrators to get a good price for their goods on the European market.’
Sugar may seem innocuous enough, but sweet-toothed Western consumers could be fuelling conflict between poor farming communities and big business with every spoonful. Sam Campbell reports from Phnom Penh

Scrambling to take advantage of the EU’s Everything But Arms (EBA) treaty, which allows duty-free, quota-free access to Europe for Cambodian goods, Cambodia’s agro-barons are trampling human rights underfoot, according to campaigners. Western companies have been accused of being complicit, seeking out the cheapest sugar, whatever the consequences.

David Pred, executive director of rights organisation Bridges Across Borders Cambodia, which has been investigating Cambodia’s sugar industry, said the sugar boom is having serious consequences for rural Cambodians. ‘We have documented widespread human rights abuses and environmental damage from all the major sugarcane concessions, impacting more than 12,000 people in three provinces,’ he said. ‘The impact on local communities has been devastating. Families have been made landless and driven into destitution and severe food insecurity. Hundreds have been made homeless and haven’t received any compensation.’

Cambodia to double rice exports to Europe

04 October 2010

PHNOM PENH (Commodity Online) : Cambodia, one of Asia's leading rice producers, said it's rice exports to Europe might hit 40,000 tones this year.

A Cambodian trade delegation composed of government officials and industry representatives has attracted buyers to discuss deals.

Will edible oil prices continue to weaken? For latest trends and insightful analysis on India's oilseeds market, subscribe to Commodity Online Info Service

Cambodia is looking for foreign investors to boost its fledgling rice milling sector so that it can reap higher dividends from its grain crop, much of which is currently sent to Vietnam to be milled and re-exported.

Last month, $583,000 worth of rice was shipped from Cambodia to Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Estonia.

Cambodian Small and Medium Industries Association aims to ship a total of 7,000 to 10,000 tonnes to European countries including France, Lithuania, , Germany, Estonia and Latvia during the rest of 2010.

Representatives of nine rice millers, including two private companies; and four government representatives from the Ministry of Commerce visited Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Poland from September 22 to 24 in search of opportunities for rice exports.

The visit also allowed industry insiders to meet with European rice traders and distributors to learn more about the regulations and quality standards required to access the European market.

The delegation found that trust and reliability was the most important issue for European buyers, especially with regard to filling deliveries on schedule. Ensuring quality standards and competitive pricing were also primary concerns for European dealers.
