During a recent questioning session conducted by the co-prosecutors behind closed door, Nuon Chea, dubbed Brother No. 2 of the Democratic Kampuchea (DK) regime, denied all the accusations leveled against him in his crime against humanity case. Nuon Chea said that if he committed these illegal activities as he is charged with, he would be very ashamed about his actions. Nuon Chea said that he was not in contact with the local grass root levels, therefore, he did not know what happened at all. He said that the true power during the DK regime lied in the hands of the army committee which he was not part of. He replied also that he was a member of the legislative branch, and he never introduced any law to kill his own nation. He said that about 40 members of his own family also died during that era. He added hat after he defected to the Cambodia government, he lived freely without anything ever happening to him, and he has no intention of destroying any proof or put pressure on anybody because he does not have a cruel character since he used to be a monk in the past.
