Battambang Authorities Unlawfully Taking Down Sam Rainsy Party Signs

Sam Rainsy Party strongly condemns Battambang authorities for pulling down four SRP signs in Battambang town this morning. This act is in violation of the Law on Political Parties which stipulates that each political party shall have its name and a symbol.

Furthermore, Battambang authorities violate Article 4 of the same law by allowing the Cambodian People's Party to keep their signs in the same locations.

Article 4 of the Law on Political Parties stipulates: " All political parties shall be entitled to the same rights, privileges and shall receive equal treatment from the Royal Government and authorities at all levels".

SRP is most concerned by this act of harassment and discrimination as registration of voters is nearing.

SRP calls for the concerned ministry to take immediate action and to ensure free and fair elections that begins with fair competition.

The four SRP signs were taken down from the following locations in Battambang town:
  1. Watt Kampaign Elementary School;
  2. Watt Damrey Sar;
  3. Svay Por commune office;
  4. Samdech Euv High School.

Synopsis: With the approaching election, the ruling CPP is once again showing its shenanigans. In Battambang and Pailin, the authority sent out cops to steal SRP signs posted in public places whereas CPP signs are left intact. Seven SRP signs were stolen in broad daylight by the CPP-controlled cops in Battambang and four were stolen in Pailin. Is this how the CPP is showing its lack of confidence in its popularity in Cambodia?

In the morning of 01 June, Russei Keo authority and SRP officials clashed at the entrance to the Chrauy Changvar Bridge, located in Chrauy Changvar commune, Russei Keo district, because the SRP insisted on raising its party sign at that location. The Koh Santepheap newspaper reported the Russei Keo authority prevented this sign raising by claiming that the SRP did not have the authorization for it, however, about 10 SRP activists, including SRP MPs Son Chhay, Ho Vann and Sok Soty protested and tried to raise the sign. This led to the clash, but no serious injuries were sustained on either side. A source indicated that after the authority confiscated the SRP sign, SRP activists tied the party flag and the national flag on a pole that still remained there, but the authority took them down and confiscated the two flags about one hour later. SRP MP Sok Soty said that he asked for the authorization from the city hall for about one month already to install the party sign at that location, but the city hall did not provide any response to this request. After a long wait, the SRP decided to raise the sign and their action resulted in the authority preventing them from setting up this sign.

Video of Hun Sen's police destroying SRP banner sign while leaving intact another party sign nearby

On March 22, 2008, Phnom Penh SRP MP Ho Vann was beaten up by Phnom Penh police force which also destroyed a SRP banner in Chruoy Changva commune, Russei Keo district, Phnom Penh City. It is interesting to note that signs belonging to other political parties nearby are allowed to remain. It appears that the CPP-controlled authority is mainly aiming at the opposition SRP party only.
