Cambodian opposition leader to speak in Lowell Saturday

LOWELL -- A Cambodian opposition leader and two other members of parliament will be in Lowell Saturday to discuss ongoing human-rights abuses in Cambodia .

Sam Rainsy, leader of the Sam Rainsy Party and generally considered the main rival to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, will appear with fellow SRP legislators Tok Vanchan and Tioulong Sumura, Rainsy's wife, on Saturday, from 5 p.m. to midnight at the Sunny Da Restaurant, 450 Chelmsford St.

Rainsy, formerly a member of the Cambodian National Assembly, has most recently been living in self-imposed exile in Australia . In March, the Cambodian Supreme Court upheld Rainsy's conviction on charges of inciting racial discrimination and uprooting border markings with neighboring Vietnam .

Shortly after the court's ruling, the National Assembly released a statement revoking Rainsy's "rights, privileges and membership as member of parliament."

Opposition Leader Sam Rainsy's upcoming visit to Philadelphia, PA

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release
11:00 AM EST, May 17, 2011

Contact: Chea Meas
Tel: (215) 833-3669

To: All Media and Public at Large
From: SRP Chapter of Pennsylvania

We would like to inform our colleagues, supporters and the public at large of the upcoming visit of H.E. Sam Rainsy to Philadelphia on Friday, May 27th, 2011.

Sam Rainsy is the President of the Sam Rainsy Party, the largest opposition party in Cambodia, and an elected Member of Parliament for Kompong Cham province. In 2009, he led residents living on the border in a protest against Vietnam, as they claimed that the neighboring nation was illegally encroaching on Cambodian territory. Because they physically returned border markers to where they legally belong, Rainsy was charged with racial incitement and the destruction of public property. The Cambodian Parliament stripped his constitutionally-guaranteed immunity from prosecution, and went so far as to bar him from his seat in the Parliament. In 2010, he went into self-exile in France, and says that he will let the court try him in absentia, as the charges against him are politically motivated.

You are invited to spend an evening with Rainsy to hear updates on his current efforts for reform in Cambodia, and to ask questions about the future of the country. This is a rare opportunity to have direct access to one of the leading figures of the opposition in Cambodia.

Date: Friday - May 27, 2011
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Location: Preah Buddha Rangsey Temple
2400 South 6th Street Philadelphia, PA 19148

If you would like more information or to schedule an interview with Sam Rainsy, please call Chea Meas at (215) 833-3669 or e-mail samrainsyparty.usa@gmail.com

Sam Rainsy Claims Proof of Border Loss

“The court is being used only as a tool, a puppet and a nonsensical joke.”

Cambodia’s opposition leader, Sam Rainsy, says he has gathered enough evidence to prove to the international community that Cambodia is losing land to Vietnam and he called on signatory countries to the 1991 Peace Accords to “kindly come to help Cambodia.”

We are in danger,” said Sam Rainsy, who is facing criminal charges for publishing a map alleging border encroachment by Vietnam, as a guest on “Hello VOA” Thursday.

Sam Rainsy remains in exile, facing a two-year sentence on charges related to uprooting border posts near Vietnam in Svay Rieng province last year. He is in the US building political support for his party.

The opposition leader said Thursday he was not concerned over the charges.

“The court is being used only as a tool, a puppet and a nonsensical joke,” he said. “It is merely a political matter which requires a political solution.”

A government spokesman said Sam Rainsy was exceeding his mandate in attacking the court system.

“The opposition party should play its role properly,” said Phay Siphan, a spokesman for the Council of Ministers. “As an opposition party, you should oppose a political trend, but not the judicial system, which we are working now to strengthen.”

Foreign ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said Sam Rainsy was unlikely to gain credence for his views.

Sam Rainsy Meets State Department Official

Sam Rainsy, leader of SRP, talks to VOA Khmer on 'Hello VOA', while visiting Washington DC, on Thursday. (Photo: by Pin Sisovann)

Sok Khemara, VOA Khmer
Washington, DC Thursday, 10 June 2010

The current ruling party in Cambodia uses the court system as a tool to prevent opposition or minorities from having a legitimate right to protect the people’s interest against corruption."
Exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy met with a senior US State Department official in Washington on Wednesday, claiming Cambodian courts were working to marginalize his party.

“The current ruling party in Cambodia uses the court system as a tool to prevent opposition or minorities from having a legitimate right to protect the people’s interest against corruption,” Sam Rainsy said, following a meeting with Scot Marciel, the Assistant Secretary of State in charge of Asean affairs.

Sam Rainsy is currently on a visit to the US to build political support for his party, which holds 26 seats in the National Assembly, compared to 90 held by the Cambodian People’s Party.

Sam Rainsy is facing criminal charges for publishing a map on his party’s website to support claims that a border arrangement between Vietnam and Cambodia has eroded national land, and he is facing a jail sentence on charges related to uprooting border markers in Svay Rieng province.

Sam Rainsy told VOA Khmer that he had raised issues of forced evictions, restricted freedom of assembly, the prosecution of journalists and a biased judiciary with Marciel.

“So there should not be one group that tries to eliminate another group, like in Cambodia,” Sam Rainsy said. “In the US, democracy is lively because they know how to respect each other, especially the majority that respects the minority.”

Cambodian government officials said Wednesday they were not concerned with Sam Rainsy’s visit to the US.

Sam Rainsy is scheduled to meet with other officials from Congress and rights groups before giving a speech to a group of Cambodian-Americans in Virginia.
