The General Association of Vietnamese Cambodians (GAVC) on Thursday began a project to build a school for overseas Vietnamese children in Cambodia's Pray Veng Province.

Funded by US$115,000 from Dong Thap People's Committee the building will have an area of 1,530 sq.m which is expected to be completed in four months.

This is the second school for overseas Vietnamese children built in Cambodia, with the other located in the capital Phnom Penh.

After the illegal immigrants now come the Viet schools ... Thank you, Ong Hoon Xhen!

HA NOI — The General Association of Vietnamese Cambodians (GAVC) on Thursday began a project to build a school for overseas Vietnamese children in Cambodia's Pray Veng Province.

This is the second school for overseas Vietnamese children built in Cambodia, with the other located in the capital Phnom Penh.

About 600 Vietnamese children living in Pray Veng are pursuing Vietnamese language classes in different locations in Cambodia.

The school construction project is part of efforts to help Vietnamese Cambodians maintain their mother tongue, traditions and customs, and to promote solidarity within the Vietnamese community.

Khmer-Vietnam Tan Tien school, run by the Vietnamese residents Association in Cambodia, held a conference on July 27 to review its activities in the 2009-2010 academic year and report on the preparations for the new school year, 2010-2011.

Principal Nguyen Van Be said despite the lack of teachers, the school has tried its best to ensure the children have enough classes. The school has also renewed new methods of teaching Vietnamese adopted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training.

In the recent academic year, 600 pupils gained good results and the number of outstanding pupils hovered around 55-65 percent.

In the forthcoming 2010-2011 school-year, the school will start to teach the Khmer language to help children communicate easily with local people and integrate quicker into society.

The school will liaise with Overseas Vietnamese businesses’ clubs to set up a fund in support of poor pupils.

Khmer are not allowed to learn their culture, language and customs in Vietnam ... but under Hun Xen, Viet pupils can attend Viet schools in Phnom Penh

A new primary school for overseas Vietnamese children officially opened in Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh on August 30 to mark the 64th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2) and the August Revolution.

The Khmer-Vietnam Tan Tien school, a three-storey building with more than 10 classrooms, is located on an area of 1,200 sq. m in Mienchay district, Phnom Penh. The State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee and several overseas Vietnamese benefactors will financed the school construction.

Addressing the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Ngo Anh Dung praised the efforts that the Vietnamese community in the country has made in the recent past.

The school will provide training to over 400 pupils in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

On the occasion, the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, the Fatherland Front Committees of Ho Chi Minh city and neighbouring provinces of Long An, Dong Nai and An Giang together with many sponsors, Vietnamese and foreign alike, donated millions of VND and presented 1,000 sets of textbooks, 4,000 notebooks, computers and music teaching instrument to the new school.

Radio Voice of Vietnam reported that the Overseas Vietnamese Association had just officially inaugurated its headquarter in Preah Sihanouk province.

At the same time, the VOV reported that a school which cost $86,000 to construct had been officiated to teach Vietnamese children the Vietnamese language from year one to year. The cost of the school construction was funded by overseas Vietnamese and Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mrs. Cheap Sotheary, Adhoc representative in Preah Sihanouk province, said that the officiation ceremony was attended by local Cambodian authority. She said: "I saw the old headquarter of the Vietnamese Association was located near the Sihanoukville Information Office. But on 27th (March) I saw their new headquarter was being officiated because now they have the rights to buy lands and they don't to rent any more. In fact, the inauguration ceremony was attended by local Cambodian authority, so may be they have proper authorisation and legal recognition from the Cambodian authority."

The inauguration ceremony, which was attended by Deputy Governor of Preah Sihanouk province and member of parliament for Preah Sihanouk province, was conducted in the Vietnamese language with Cambodian translations.

According to the Vietnamese radio, there are 50 Vietnamese children who are attending the school to study Vietnamese language with Vietnam's Kien Giang province footing the bill to the tune of 20 million dongs (~$US1700) to furnish the school.

Mrs. Cheap Sotheary had asked the local authority about the legal status of those Vietnamese residents. She said: "I asked them, are all those Vietnamese legal residents? They told me that, in fact, those Vietnamese came to live in Cambodia a long time ago. They have proper documents like personal ID cards and family books. They want to tell me that, in fact they are Khmer citizens. Most of the members of the association are legal residents who had lived in Cambodia legally for a very long time, but some were temporary residents who had just come to do business in Preah Sihanouk province, they have proper documents that are recognised by the authority. Before, there was no Vietnamese school, but when the headquarter of the association was officiated, we also see the inauguration of the school as well. Before, there is only a Chinese school.

According to the same radio broadcast, there are 823 Vietnamese families residing in Preah Sihanouk province presently.
