“I will sacrifice my life if authorities try to demolish our houses again.”
authorities had acted “crueler than the Pol Pot regime.”
Villagers at the Boeung Kak lake development who clashed with police over the weekend said Monday they will continue to protest the loss of their land at the lakeside development until they are granted titles at the contentious site.
The clashes erupted on Friday, when excavators, protected by riot police, began tearing down the homes of a handful of residents. At least one youth activist for the opposition Sam Rainsy Party was beaten by police in the ensuing scuffle, party officials said, as the machines tore down eight homes to make way for a commercial and residential development.
Residents said Monday they received no warnings of the eviction and that houses were destroyed with their possessions inside. Some residents said they are now preparing to defend the other homes in the village from a similar fate.
Phan Chheang Reth, 54, said villagers were gathering rocks, clubs and knives to defend their homes.
Two dozen families in the area say they were left out of a land deal pushed last month by Prime Minister Hun Sen, who had sought a resolution to the long standing dispute between villagers who refused to take buyouts or other deals from Shukaku, Inc., a development firm that hopes to build up 133-hectares of filled-in lake property.
Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema could not be reached for comment Monday, but he told VOA Khmer last week that the city was not issuing land titles to some families on the lakeside. They would seek to compensate them instead, he said.
The deal, which will set aside plots of land for nearly 800 families, came amid warnings from the World Bank that it would freeze funding to Cambodia if the dispute was not resolved.
But Friday’s clashes underscored how that deal has failed at least some villagers.
Phan Chheang Reth said she was devising an alarm system, whereby she will bang on an iron pot to warn fellow villagers if police approach. “I will sacrifice my life if authorities try to demolish our houses again,” she said.
Chheng Lep, a 45-year-old resident of Village 22, said eight houses were destroyed Friday. She said authorities had acted “crueler than the Pol Pot regime.”

Land revolution is being built up in Cambodia. Soon people all over the country will join because they just cannot stand to see inhumane treatment by the authority to the beung kon folks and the indifference of the government to response to the situation. hun sen is doom very soon not by the ordinary Khmers but by people in his party because they just cannot watch to see how he lets people be abused and terrorized by the cops who are supposed to protect people anymore. ah hun sen will come down soon!!!

Everyone should sacrifice for their homes. If there is no home, where to live? How do you start your life? How can you do better? No home, no hope... as simple as that and Hun Sen gov't destroying their own people's hopes.
99 years policy seem to work for the Cambodian high ranking official, but destroyed the country bringing more suffering to the poor Cambodians. It is “crueler than the Pol Pot regime.”
I hope the Cambodians people stand up and stop this madness that destroyed our beloved country.
Only a hand full of rich and high ranking official (Hon Xen, Xox Ahn and their gangs) that benefit from this.
This is the way Hon Xen try to make a quick money by destroyed the country. Next time you remember who you are voting for??
Vote to destroyed your country or vote to improve the lives of the people without destroyed the country???
Only you yourselves can help your own country. CPP destroyed the country other parties might save the country from the destruction. 99 years policy should be scrap and new policy should be implemented to replace the policy that destroyed our country.
99 years policy = Cambodia for sale policy.
This policy should be scrap at once.
Cambodia has over 14 millions people but New Zealand has only less than 5 millions look at the difference between the two goverment! And ask Why ? and Why not ?
"Christchurch earthquake:
government wants to demolish 5,000 homes
The New Zealand government has offered to buy thousands of the most badly quake-damaged houses in Christchurch so it can demolish them.
Announcing the buyout plan, John Key, the prime minister, said some land in the worst-hit areas was so unstable it would be impossible to rebuild on it "for many years".
The decision means land in the razed suburbs will effectively be abandoned in the city's rebuild.
Christchurch, the country's second biggest city, was devastated by major earthquakes in September 2010 and again in February this year, and continues to be rocked by strong aftershocks which are causing more damage.
Mr Key said engineers have divided the city, home to 350,000 people, into four zones.
The government will offer to buy all 5,000 properties in the worst affected areas, classed as red zone.
Householders who accept must assign their right to an insurance payout to the government in return.
He estimated the net cost to the government would be up to NZ$635 million (£323 million).
About 10,000 houses in an orange zone need further investigation, while a further 100,000 in a green zone can be rebuilt.
Properties yet to be assessed comprise a white zone.
The worst-hit suburbs are all in low-lying eastern areas of the city that suffered liquefaction, a process in which the ground turns to liquid during the shaking and leaves a quagmire of sludge.
As beleaguered residents, frustrated by months of waiting for the announcement, pored over online maps to see which zone their street was in, Mr Key pledged: "The government remains fully committed to rebuilding Christchurch."
He went on: "Since September last year, the government has been working to provide certainty for residents, while recognising many people have their life savings tied up in their homes."
The prime minister said the move was "the next step in the government's ongoing work to give the people of greater Christchurch a clearer picture of what their future holds".
The cost of rebuilding Christchurch has been estimated at NZ$15 billion (£7.6 billion) or more."
7:34 AM fucker ah CPP'S TOILET!
VOA, be careful-, by incited civil war in CAMBODIA.
VOA< be responsible,if, this is going to start the war..
VOA, don't destroy our country
VOA, don't damage our country,,
10:29am please stop being so stupid, who is going to believe you,it's only you and some of the stupid CPP that use this tactic to scare the innocent Khmer people.Don't tell that the world , they will laugh their ass off at you.
VOA,you do a great job to help Khmer and its people.
VOA,you do a great to tell the world how bad the cpp treat Khmer people.
VOA,with you we will bring down down HUN XEN, CPP,and his master, yuon
VOA,we appreciate your job well done. Keep it up.
Good Decision!
It is time to fight back and if that leads to civil war, so be it!
It is civil war everyday for me, the poor anyway!
So let us have a short civil war and get it over with rather than having a civil war every day!
i don't think anyone in their right mind and the world as well support another civil war in cambodia, you know! so, stop dreaming and fantasizing that, ok! i think the world is rather encouraged cambodia to work together and settle social issue by peaceful mean, not violence or whatever, you know! those that suggest violence must be on drugs or drunk or both, really! so, don't even dream about it in cambodia or here, ok!
They have no right to destroy your home.
Protecting your properties is your right and obligation.
