PHNOM PENH — Cambodia's ailing former king Norodom Sihanouk left his country again for Beijing on Thursday to undergo medical tests, despite a vow to stay in his homeland forever.

The 89-year-old ex-monarch, who is a revered figure in Cambodia, smiled and waved to well-wishers as he was given a red-carpet sendoff by Prime Minister Hun Sen and other senior government officials at Phnom Penh airport.

It is unclear how long Sihanouk, who is travelling with his wife and their son King Norodom Sihamoni, will remain abroad.

The ex-monarch has suffered from a number of ailments in recent years, including cancer, diabetes and hypertension. He has been a frequent visitor to China, where he received the bulk of his treatment.

After returning in October from a previous stay of almost three months in Beijing, Sihanouk told his compatriots that he would never leave Cambodia again, in a speech to mark the 20th anniversary of his return from exile.

But his medical needs have made it impossible to keep that promise, Sihanouk's personal secretary Prince Sisowath Thomico told AFP.

"The Chinese doctors can travel to treat him in Cambodia, but they can't bring their equipment with them so they asked him to go to China for a check-up," Thomico said.

"His health is still good," he added. "He is still strong."

One of Asia's longest-serving monarchs, the former king abruptly quit the throne in October 2004 in favour of his son, citing old age and health problems.

Despite abdicating, the ex-monarch sometimes uses his website to communicate with the outside world.

In his most recent message in early January, he said he wanted to be cremated upon his death and have his ashes kept in an urn inside the Royal Palace, reversing an earlier wish to be buried.

To compare the Thai king and king Sihanouk, Thailand has modern medical facilities while Cambodia's has a little to nothing.

Reversed King. I don't, do you? One reason only for his significant involvement figurehead in 1970-1976, which brought the killing field to Cambodia.
He led the coalition government against VN invasion but didn't get him off the hook.

Million of Cambodian people souls and spirits, including his dead family members, are condemned submerging in the darkness in their cold enduring graves demanding for his explannation of catatrophic proportion of failing politics of so called-liberation Cambodia from US expansion in Indochina.

I think King Sihanouk just broke his promise. When he recently arrived to Cambodia he promised to stay in Cambodia forever and promised to never leave Cambodia again. And in the case of medical assistance, his people would arrange the Chinese doctors to come to Cambodia to do the medical check-ups. Now he is leaving Cambodia???

Another reason is maybe he cannot stand watching the Dictator Hun Sen oppressing Khmer nation such as the land eviction cases, hence he has to leave. If this is the case then I applaud his departure.

KHMER Angkor.

he sought treatment in china because cambodia still lack good healthcare system like in thailand or in the west, etc, you know! plus, old and young people alike if they can afford it will seek treatment overseas.

maybe cambodia should reform in the healthcare system and encourage others to invest in building good healthcare system in cambodia for a change, this way all khmer will have good medical care and affordable healthcare so they wouldn't have to leave the country like this, i think!

"Cambodia's ailing former king Norodom Sihanouk left his country again for Beijing on Thursday to undergo medical tests, despite a vow to stay in his homeland forever."

I have no problem whatsoever with King Father Norodom Sihanouk going anywhere to get a medical treatment or tests; after all, that is his right and he can use and demand it.

However, to break your own recent and public vow of not leaving your own people or Cambodia anymore for medical reason and to die at home, in such a short time after it was made publically and emotionally is really insulting the memory and the intelligence of the Cambodian people, though poor and perhaps not very well educated in comparison to other people of the western world, are still smart enough to ponder now the sincerity of such a vow.

Could it be possible that the vow was used to shore up public support for a dying monarchy due to its inaction and lack of courageous fulfillment of duty and obligation to justify its own existence in a modern world where nobody thinks of king as divine anymore!

King Father Norodom Sihanouk has just given another serious blow to the Cambodian monarchy he has never stopped trying to preserve at any cost!

You cannot revive an institution that has no intention to revive itself and become independent and thus can live on its own.

Dr. Peang-Meth, in his recent article published by the Asian Human Rights Commission and posted on KI Media site on January 17 of this year, said and I quote

"A mind that does not question is intellectually useless, especially in this ever changing world."

I would say that the current Cambodian monarchy possesses such a mind.

People know that donations from the king come from someone since the king does not own or possess anything. It is a strong possibility that that someone and his or her action may be the causes of the suffering of the people. This is what I call take $ 100.00 from the owner and give $ 1.00 back through the intermediary.
