Supporters of 13 imprisoned Boeung Kak women took to the capital’s streets yesterday to call for their release, but the absence of one protester spoke of the toll the ordeal is taking on the women’s children.

Por Sokunkanha, the 11-year-old daughter of Tol Sreypov, one of the women jailed after a three-hour trial on May 24, spent yesterday in a clinic being treated for laryngitis, which her father said she had been diagnosed with after joining several protests.

“Because she wanted to see her mother set free, she has often missed school to march through the streets with other kids seeking an intervention to get their mothers freed from prison,” Por Kundara said.

Chinese premier visits former Cambodian King

Premier Wen Jiabao visited former Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk, his wife and Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni in Beijing on Friday to extend Lunar New Year greetings.

Wen also conveyed President Hu Jintao's greetings to them, and wished Sihanouk and his wife good health.

Wen spoke highly of their important contribution to boosting China-Cambodia friendship, adding the ever-lasting friendship between both countries had withstood tests of various kinds.

"Any preparation for a person’s death would be a way of looking down on his life."

Former king Norodom Sihanouk left for medical treatment in Beijing on Thursday on advice from his Chinese doctors, royal officials said.

He traveled with his wife and their son, King Norodom Sihamoni, and it was unclear how long they intend to stay.

In an October speech, the king said he had come back to Cambodia to stay, but a royal adviser said his medical condition had made it impossible to keep that promise.

Last week, the former monarch, a once powerful and revered figure to most Cambodians, issued an order that his body be cremated after his death.

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia's ailing former king Norodom Sihanouk left his country again for Beijing on Thursday to undergo medical tests, despite a vow to stay in his homeland forever.

The 89-year-old ex-monarch, who is a revered figure in Cambodia, smiled and waved to well-wishers as he was given a red-carpet sendoff by Prime Minister Hun Sen and other senior government officials at Phnom Penh airport.

It is unclear how long Sihanouk, who is travelling with his wife and their son King Norodom Sihamoni, will remain abroad.

On 29 December 2011, Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath, the mother of King Sihamoni and wife of ex-King Norodom Sihanouk, gave the following declaration that can be perceived as a political favor to the ruling CPP party: "Let the people not have any concerns because Cambodia under the leadership of Samdach Akkok Moha Sena Bat Dey Dek-chor Hun Xen, the PM of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Chumteav Honorary-Academician-PhD Bun Rany Hun Xen had done everything for the well being of the people throughout the country. Wherever there is hardship, that place will receive aid from the government and the Cambodian red cross all the time."

Fine, if she is not the queen, then her husband is not the king, so why couldn't they be brought to the KR trial to answer about their activities for and during the KR regime?

Hero King Norodom Sihanouk, his queen, Norodom Monineat Sihanouk, have all left Phnom Penh at 9AM on 18 April to return back home to Beijing for medical care there, after spending 10 days for the Khmer New Year with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. King-Father and Queen-Mother arrived in Cambodia on 06 April after spending 9 months of medical care in China.
