US calls for release of Boeung Kak activists

The news of the call for release is circulating all around Cambodia. This is the first sign of hope for the Beung Kak Lake 15 since their illegal arrest and imprisonment.

Sec. Clinton's visit to Cambodia in July will allow the women of Cambodia to share with her our vision for the future of our nation.

State violence against women who protest against injustice must stop and economic land concessions impact thousands of families and women are first to bear the brunt.

Elected officials from the opposition must be allowed to serve the people without fear of prosecution.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged the Cambodian government to release 13 Boeung Kak lake women imprisoned after a three-hour trial last month, telling Foreign Minister Hor Namhong at a meeting in Washington that such a move would support freedom of expression.

“The secretary expressed concern over recent protests regarding land-rights issues and urged Cambodia to allow Boeung Kak lake detainees full access to due process, noting that their release would be a sign of support for freedom of expression,” Sean McIntosh, spokesman for the US embassy in Phnom Penh, said yesterday.
