Hun Xen's royal decision for the prince: Politics or Advisory role

Cambodian PM warns Prince to lose advisory role if joins politics

December 09, 2010
Xinhua

Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen warned Thursday that Prince Norodom Ranariddh will lose his role as president of the supreme advisory council to King Norodom Sihamoni if he joins politics.

Delivering speech at inauguration of University of Battambang on Thursday, Hun Sen said he will inform the King to write off the prince's position from his advisory role in the next few days, if he decides to join politics as planned.

The prince wrote a letter to Hun Sen last month saying that he will return to politics to lead "Norodom Ranariddh Party"for the 2013 general election.

"Taking this opportunity, I would like to inform Samdech Decho (Hun Sen) that I am happy to go back and lead Norodom Ranariddh Party in 2013 in order to reunite royalists and Sihanoukists so that we can further cooperate with your Royal Government in the fifth term which will then comply by the principle of national reconciliation and unity...," the prince said in the letter.

Hun Sen said that the prince has his own choice between an" advisor to the king or politics".

The prince announced in October 2008 his complete resignation from politics.

The Norodom Ranariddh Party was established in 2007 after the prince was toppled from the president of the royalist FUNCINEC Party in 2006.

Hun Sen warned that Prince Ranariddh's re-entry into politics will cause ambiguity among royal family, the king and the former king whether they are also involved in politics.

He said once the prince joins politics, the prince might suggest he is the son of former King Norodom Sihahouk and is the elder brother of the present King Norodom Sihamoni.

Prince Ranariddh (pictured), President of the Norodom Ranariddh Party has accused Prime Minister Hun Sen of masterminding his exile and of obstructing his return to participate in the national election.

In an interview with Radio Free Asia last night (11th June), the Prince said: "For me, the facts related to my case was that Prime Minister Hun Sen was behind everything that led to my exile. Everybody knows the reasons behind the charges against me, which was purely politically motivated. People only need to listen to Mr. Hun Sen's speech to know the truth. He had said about putting me on handcuff, putting me in jail, if I decided to return to Cambodia before the High Court decides my case."

The prime minister has denied on numerous occasions that he has anything to do with Prince Ranariddh's ouster from the Funcinpec Party's presidency nor has he involved in the court case against the prince by saying that it is purely his personal affairs and an internal affairs of the Funcinpec Party.

In a speech broadcasted on Beehive Radio station on Tuesday, Prince Ranariddh called on voters not to cast vote for the CPP, saying that a vote for the CPP is a vote against the monarchy, and that Hun Sen is an enemy of the royal palace. “Please do not vote [CPP] again, otherwise the monarchy will be abolished and if the monarchy is abolished, we will go to hell,” The Cambodia Daily quoted the prince as saying in his radio address. CPP MP Nguon Nhel denied the prince’s statement, saying that this is merely the “prince’s trick.” The Cambodia Daily also reported that Hun Sen’s reference to the recent abolition of the Nepalese monarchy on 28 May had cause deep concern in the royal palace. However, Khieu Kanharith claimed that Hun Sen’s reference was directed to Prince Ranariddh only, and not to the monarchy.

Hun Sen asks King-Father to “teach lessons” to Ranariddh, his son, so that he no longer commits “idiocy”

Hun Sen warns politicians who are members of the royal family

The fire of discord remains lit as always between Prime minister Hun Sen and Prince Ranariddh. The new episode of their skirmish took place during Hun Sen’s visit to Kratie province on Tuesday 22 April: Hun Sen very harshly attacked his former partner. He accused Prince Ranariddh of spreading false information about his return to Cambodia.

“He said that I proposed him conditions about his return to Cambodia. It’s completely idiot. It’s his personal affair and it has nothing to do with me,” Hun Sen declared while asking King-Father Norodom Sihanouk to “teach lessons” to his son so that he no longer commits “idiocy.”

In an interview with RFA from Malaysia, during the New Year, Prince Ranariddh claimed that Hun Sen proposed him to choose one of three options to return to Cambodia. According to the prince, he would have to present his apologies to the Hun Sen, as Sam Rainsy did in 2006, or he would have to accept to return back to the Funcinpec helm. “I absolutely cannot accept these conditions,” the prince said while accusing Hun Sen of wanting to put an end to his political career. While denying that he made such propositions, Hun Sen labeled the prince as “politician without strategy” and he declared that he does not want to talk to the prince anymore from now on.

Taking the opportunity on this occasion, Hun Sen warned politicians who are members of the royal family by saying: “If you are involved in politics, you must leave aside your princely titles. Here, everybody is on equal footing.” He even went on to declare that he wanted to eliminate the deference vocabulary used for royal family members at the National Assembly, the Senate, and in the government, “in order for safekeeping equality.” “We defend the monarchy, but on the political arena, we must all be equal,” Hun Sen launched while presenting his respect to members of the royal family not involved in politics.

Prince Ranariddh’s reaction to Hun Sen’s speech in Kampong Cham

Wednesday, December 05, 2007

Prince Norodom Ranariddh, NRP President, reacted against the speech given by Prime minister Hun Sen who said in Stung Trang district that the prince was merely a recording scribe of Samdech Norodom Sihanouk during the peace negotiation in France, but that the prince wants to nominate himself as the Father of National Unification instead.

Responding to Hun Sen’s speech, the prince said that he actively participated in the resolutions during the political stalemates following the 1993, 1998 and 2003 elections. The prince’s response was issued in a statement distributed by the NRP on 03 December 2007 which was published in the Kampuchea Thmei newspaper.

In this statement, Prince Ranariddh said that, following the general election in 1993, in order to avoid political problems and the land secession threat, he was willing to part half of his power to the CPP. Through this, the prince wants to show that he did a good deed towards the CPP as he was willing to share half of his power to the CPP.

Om Yin Tieng, Hun Sen’s spokesman, told the Kampuchea Thmei that the prince’s statement it nothing more than that of a stuck prince. Om Yin Tieng said: “I believe that if the power the CPP detains came from Prince Ranariddh’s charity, why didn’t he keep the power to use for himself? Why did he give power to others, and ended having no power for himself?”

Om Yen Tieng told the Kampuchea Thmei that the person who claims that he gave power to others, turned out to be a power beggar instead, and this does not look right. This is tantamount of a beggar claiming that he gave alms to all others. Om Yen tieng said that at this point in time, the population understands highly the situation, they are not dumb enough to let others cheat them anymore. Therefore, the prince’s words shows that he is stuck, and he has nowhere else to go.

Another anonymous high-ranking NRP official told the Kampuchea Thmei that, from now one, the prince will issue documents attacking the government without restraint anymore. The same official said that the documents prepared for attacking Hun Sen in the future, will consists of documents dating from 1993, during the first government mandate, to 2007, the current third government mandate.

Hun Sen asks people not to be fooled [by the CPP?] for a third time

Tuesday, December 04, 2007
Everyday.com.kh
Translated from Khmer by Socheata

Prime minister Hun Sen asked people not to be fooled by people who used to cheat them for the third time. During a speech given at a (banhchos seyma) inauguration in Kampong Cham province on Monday, Hun Sen said that the mixed vegetable soup (samlor kako) is not good until all the spices are added in. (In the same vein), democracy in Cambodia also counts cheaters, liars, and those who tell the truth. However, he said that if people are fooled for first time, the fault is on the cheater. If people are fooled for the second time, the fault is on the people, and the cheater is the right party. However, if people are fooled for third time, this means that the people are really dumb. Hun Sen added that there is no reason to talk about this issue anymore, and he asked that people not be cheated for the third time. Hun Sen said that people should have their feet bound to their country, their lands and waters, in order to be able to work. Hun Sen added that he knows very much about the hardship of the farmers. With his speech, Hun Sen seems to be aiming at Prince Norodom Ranariddh who is currently living overseas, and the prince used to lie to people during two mandates already.

Hun Sen severely criticized King-Father’s former recording aid

Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Prime minister criticized using very strong words against the former recording aid of King-Father Norodom Sihanouk, during the peace negotiation held in 1987.

During a speech given at the (Banhchos seyma) inauguration of the Obolkiri pagoda temple (also known as the Tuol Sambuor pagoda), Samdach Dek Cho Hun Sen reminded about the 02 December which is the 29th anniversary of the formation of the United Front for the National Salvation of Kampuchea and also the 20th anniversary of the Hun Sen-Sihanouk peace negotiation held in Fer-en-Tardenois, France.

Hun Sen said that the Sihanouk-Hun Sen tribune is a historical event that cannot be erased or hidden. (However,) some who are nothing more than a recording aid during the event wants to promote themselves to be at the same level as Hun Sen, and he even wanted to replace his father’s duty. Hun Sen revealed that his speech can lead people to understand that some wanted to become as the father of national unification.

Hun Sen said that this recording aid was nothing more that an official holding the same rank as Cham Prasidh, who was then Hun Sen’s recording aid. “Don’t boast yourself as being equal to the Peace father, don’t do it. You are nothing but a recording aid, then you nominate yourself as the father, there is only one father, that’s Samdech Norodom Sihanouk, but you are elevating yourself way too much. I’m saying this, it’s not to insult you, but you are betraying history,” Hun Sen claimed. Hun Sen added: “You elevated yourself back and forth until you totally disappeared, this is what we called betrayal of historical truth.”

Although Hun Sen did not name the person whom he was referring to, other than saying that he was King-Father’s recording aid, news analysts believe that he was aiming at Prince Norodom Ranariddh who is currently living in Malaysia.

It should be noted that during the peace negotiation between Hun Sen, then the representative of the People’s Republic of Kampuchea (PRK), with Samdech Norodom Sihanouk, the representative of the tri-partite resistance movement, Prince Norodom Ranariddh also participated in this negotiation as well.

Cambodian PM breaks off connection with Prince Ranariddh

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced he would cut off connection with Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who is still in self-imposed exile abroad, local media reported Tuesday.

"We have closed the door. I told him the choice, which is the way to come back, but he refused. So, I stopped talking to him. Hun Sen will not help.. if you send a letter, I will return it," Hun Sen was quoted by the Cambodia Daily newspaper as saying.

The premier also told the prince's subordinates not to try to seek any help for him to be able to return to Cambodia, reasoning that the prince has made too many requests in regards to his return, the Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper said.

However, Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP) spokesman Muth Chantha, denied NRP has been begging Hun Sen for help on behalf of their leader, adding that the way for the prince to return is not through Hun Sen and that only King Norodom Sihamoni could help the prince, according to the Khmer-language newspaper.

"We must respect the constitution and the King. The King can grant a pardon-not the prime minister," he was quoted by the Cambodia Daily as saying.

However, Funcinpec spokesman Nouv Sovatharo said that the prince still has an opportunity to return if he chooses Funcinpec to help him, the Cambodia Daily said.

Earlier this year, Ranariddh, son of Sihanouk, was sentenced to 18 months in jail in absentia by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court over corruption charges filed by Funcinpec. Before the verdict was made, the prince left Cambodia and has stayed overseas ever since.
