Vietnam’s [ONE-WAY] exports to Cambodia rise

The two–way trade turnover between Vietnam and Cambodia reached US$626.4 million in the first three months this year, up 45 percent over the same period of 2009.

According to the General Department of Customs, Cambodia’s imports from Vietnam surpassed US$498 million (up 44.3 percent) in the review period, according for 2.1 percent of Vietnam’s total export turnover.

In the recent years, Vietnam’s commodity export value to Cambodia has been growing at a double digit rate.

HANOI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam and Cambodia expressed their strong will in reaching the bilateral trade of two billion U.S. dollars in 2010, the local newspaper Vietnam Investment Times reported Monday.

The target was made at a conference on opportunities for Vietnam to do business in Cambodia. The conference, which was recently-ended in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam, drew participation of relevant agencies of both Vietnam and Cambodia.

Cambodia will be a potential market for Vietnam as Cambodian people has turned their eyes on consuming Vietnam's goods and products instead of Thailand's ones, said Yeav Kim Hean, a commercial counselor of Vietnam-base Cambodian Embassy.

Cambodia is calling for foreign investment in its key sectors of hydropower, mining, cultivation of industrial plants, and telecommunication. This opens more opportunities for Vietnam's businesses to invest in Cambodia, said Huynh Tan Phong, vice director of Ho Chi Minh Trade Promotion Agency at the conference.

To reach the target, Vietnam will conduct a wide range of trade promotion activities in Cambodia from now on. These activities include market surveys, conferences on trade cooperation and trade fairs, said Phong.

In 2008, the two-way trade between Vietnam and Cambodia was 1.7billion U.S. dollars, up 31 percent year-on-year. Of which, Vietnam's exports to Cambodia earned about 1.45 billion U.S. dollars, according to Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade.

With 513 businesses having operations in Cambodia, Vietnam ranks 8th among foreign investors in Cambodia, said Yeav, the Cambodian commercial counselor.

A trade fair opening Thursday at an industrial park in the Vietnamese border province of An Giang will showcase Cambodian and Vietnamese products.

It will attract 200 businesses from both countries and is meant to promote trade across the border, the organizer, An Giang Trade, Tourist and Investment, Promotion Center, said.

The center said the six-day fair to be held at the Xuan To Industrial Park would also promote tourism as it would coincide with the National Sam Mountain Festival in the province.

It said a delegation of Vietnamese businesses and government officials would depart for Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat to survey the Cambodian market.

Vietnam’s annual exports to Cambodia grew from US$268 million in 2003 to $1.5 billion last year, mainly of foodstuffs, fruits, building materials, fertilizers and plastic products.

A recent survey by Cambodia’s largest daily newspaper, Rasmei Kampuchea, shows that Vietnamese goods are especially favoured in the Cambodian market.

The survey was conducted among senior officials of the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce and the country’s consumers during a Vietnamese products fair in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

According to the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, Vietnam took the lead with US$988 million worth of products consumed in Cambodia in 2008, surpassing China ($784 million) and Thailand ($674 million).

Vietnam exports a wide range of commodities to Cambodia, such as medicine, cosmetics, textiles and garments, electronics, mechanical products, processed food, fruit and vegetables.

This is the second year that Vietnam has topped the list of countries producing goods consumed in Cambodia.

Cambodian economic experts predict that with its geographical advantage, Vietnam will be able to maintain its leading position if it continues to diversify its products and improve its designs.

Vietnam goods exhibition to open in Cambodia

As many as 170 export and production businesses have registered to participate in a trade fair that will open in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh on April 1.

The five-day fair will feature 330 booths displaying household appliances, foods, textile and leather products, construction materials, chemicals, production tools, and stationary.

The fair, co-organised by the HCM City Investment and Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC), the High-Quality Vietnamese Goods Businesses Club, and the Vietnam Goods Trade and Services Corp. (Vietgoods), is the eighth of its kind to be held in Cambodia since 2002.

There will also be seminars on product quality, and contract signings between Vietnamese partners and Cambodian businesses.

VietNamNet Bridge - The Tinh Bien international border gate market (photo) in southern An Giang province has since early this year received an average of 1,000 visitors every day, earning over 5 billion VND, a year-on-year increase of 42 percent.

In this February, the number of visitors coming to the market has doubled the last month’s figure.

The market which was established 10 years ago provides home-made products as well as imports from Cambodia and Thailand such as cloth, clothes, household appliances, fruits and foods.

Apart from the market, the Tinh Bien international border gate also has a duty-free supermarket which provides more than 200 essential goods items imported from Asian, European and American countries.

Vietnam-Cambodia trade hit US$1.7 billion in 2008 [mainly to the benefit of Vietnam]

VietNamNet Bridge - Two-way trade between Vietnam and Cambodia hit nearly US$1.7 billion in 2008, an increase of US$400 million from a year earlier, according to the Vietnamese Trade office in Phnom Penh.

Of the total figure, Vietnam exported US$1.45 billion worth of goods to Cambodia, the office said on January 10.

Between 2004-08, the volume of Vietnamese goods exported to the neighbouring country increased by 40 percent annually and the export value rose fivefold compared to the import value.

The leading export staples to Cambodia in 2008 were building steel, agricultural machines, fertilisers, plant pesticides, household utensils, farm produce, milk, seafood and petrol. Seafood products made up 80 percent of Cambodia’s market share, followed by building steel (68 percent) and farm produce (67 percent).

Cambodian exports were mostly wooden products, rubber latex, grains, unprocessed cashew nuts, tobacco and cassava.

By late 2008, 120 Vietnamese businesses opened their representative offices and showrooms in Cambodia.

Currently, Vietnam is Cambodia’s 10th largest foreign investor, with 19 licensed projects capitalised at US$228 million.

Vietnam to boost economic cooperation with Cambodia

VIENTIANE, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam and Cambodia have agreed to beef up their cooperation, especially in the fields of oil and gas, electricity, mining, cash crop cultivation, and construction material production.

During the meeting between Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen here Sunday, on the occasion of their attention to the 3rd Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Summit, they have agreed to accelerate Vietnamese-backed projects in Cambodia.

Trade between Vietnam and Cambodia should reach 2 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, said the two prime ministers.

The two sides have also agreed to finish their land border demarcation in 2012 as scheduled, and closely cooperate in dealing with some other issues, including those on using Mekong water resource.

Starting on Sunday, the two-day summit with the theme of "Enhancement of Competitiveness via Greater Connectivity" will focus its discussion on strengthening transport connectivity, boosting cooperation between public and private sectors, implementing sustainable environment management and enhancing cooperation for GMS developments. GMS members include Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and China.

Cambodia, Viet Nam target $2.3 billion in bilateral trade by 2010

AN GIANG — Cambodia and Viet Nam are expected to achieve bilateral trade worth US$2.3 billion annually by 2010, according to reports released at the border-trade meeting held in An Giang Province last week.

In the first 11 months of 2007, trade turnover between Viet Nam and Cambodia amounted to $1.1 billion, a year-on-year increase of 30 per cent.

Viet Nam attained export turnover of $896 million with Cambodia while imports from the neighbouring country amounted to $180 million.

A report from the Viet Nam Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Asia-Pacific Department said trade between the two countries rose from $184 million in 2001 to $940 million in 2006.

Cambodia is currently the 16th biggest overseas market for Vietnamese goods while Viet Nam is the third largest buyer for Cambodian exports, behind Thailand and China.

Viet Nam enjoys a trade surplus over Cambodia. Major exports from Viet Nam include textiles and garments, plastics, computers, electronics and components, vegetables and fruits, seafood and electrical home appliances. Imports from Cambodia include tobacco materials, rubber, wood products and cloth.

The report said border-trade between the two countries has risen by 30 per cent annually during the past five years.

Trade between the two countries operates through border gates in ten Vietnamese border provinces. Up to 95 per cent of that trade is conducted in the provinces of An Giang and Tay Ninh. In 2006, trade in the Mekong province of An Giang amounted to $600 million, accounting for 87 per cent of border trade between Viet Nam and Cambodia.

The 10 Vietnamese provinces bordering Cambodia have eight border economic zones that cover 6,677sq.m, representing 2.7 per cent of the total area of these provinces.

These border economic zones contribute 34 per cent of the total import taxes and 10.2 per cent of total export taxes of the 23 border economic zones across the country.
