Vancouver is a beautiful city, and I love it here. I can now start a new life with freedom... [But] one day I hope that I can return to my home country safely.

Vancouver, 3 September 2012 — More than 165,000 refugees reside in Canada, according to the latest UNHCR statistics, and yet many of their stories are left untold.

Pen Puthsaphea (Phea), 29, is a former Cambodian journalist who escaped to Thailand in 2010. In March 2012, Phea was arrested by Thai authorities and threatened with deportation. After being recognized as a refugee, he was immediately processed for resettlement.

He now lives in Vancouver, Canada. Last month, Phea wrote to tell us his story.

Fleeing political oppression in Cambodia

I am the youngest child of six, raised mostly by my older sisters. I was born in a small village in Kampot province in southwestern Cambodia.

I witnessed so much corruption in my country, and wanted to see it change from poor to rich, and towards greater respect for human rights. Authorities harass and intimidate civil society groups with impunity, and land grabbing and forced evictions by officials remain pervasive problems.

Canada says it is suspending diplomatic relations with Iran, closing its embassy in Tehran and expelling all Iranian diplomats from Canada.

Foreign Minister John Baird said Friday his government “views the government of Iran as the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today.”

He said Iranian diplomats in Canada must leave within five days.

Baird gave several reasons for the decision, including Iran's nuclear program, its military assistance to Syria, and its hostility toward Israel. He also said Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism.

Canada looking to boost trade in Southeast Asia

VietNamNet Bridge – Canada’s International Trade Minister Ed Fast will make a tour of four Southeast Asians from Aug 27-Sep 3 boost trade relations with the region.

The minister will be accompanied by a business delegation during the 7-day visit that takes him to Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar, according to the Canadian Ministry of International Trade.

Fast said on August 26 that the fast-growing markets including the Southeast Asia are an important part in the country’s action plan in the economic field.

Synopsis: Sam Rainsy, SRP President, and Kem Sokha, HRP President, will depart on 31 July 2012 for North America, the EU and Japan to seek support from overseas opposition activists, as well as to meet with a number of important Superpower officials. The goal of their trip is to spread the merger of the opposition parties, to demand reform for the Cambodian National Election Committee (NEC) and to seek intervention for the return of opposition leader Sam Rainsy back to Cambodia. Both Kem Sokha and SRP MP Mu Sochua will depart from Cambodia on 31 July 2012 to head for the US where they will meet opposition leader Sam Rainsy.

Manulife targets Cambodia's growing middle class

TORONTO (Reuters) - Manulife Financial Corp, Canada's largest life insurer, has set up shop in Cambodia, hoping to tap into an emerging middle class in the southeast Asian country.

The move is part of the Toronto-based company's strategy of targeting profit growth in Asia as part of its plan to reach net profit to C$4 billion ($3.90 billion) by 2015.

Beset by write-downs and market-related charges, Manulife reported earnings of C$129 million in 2011.

MONTREAL - What a scene it was at Kim Hour on a recent Friday at lunchtime. Two birthday celebrations going on simultaneously around large circular tables, complete with cakes and candles. A group of elderly Asian men sharing wine and getting progressively louder as the afternoon wore on. Wriggling babies being shushed by various family members. Single businessmen talking on cellphones while eating Cantonese-style lobster. (Doing both at once is no mean feat, and fascinating to watch, I must say.) All the while, servers whisked back and forth, carrying loaded plates and clanking dishes into carts. We’d shown up for the midday rush, but I got the sense that there’s rarely much of a pause at this bustling, pan-Asian restaurant.

$1,000 in pennies for Cambodian kids

The last penny may have been minted on May 4 but the little copper coin is still making a big impact.

Students at Woodward Hill Elementary in Surrey spent the month of May turning over couch cushions and emptying their parents' pockets to raise approximately $1,000 in pennies to help children in Cambodia.

Over the past three years, students at Woodward Hill have raised close to $4,000 to help fund a free school 30 kilometres outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital.
