Yesterday Sophaon was hit with a massive piece of rock, beaten with electric baton, fell unconscious in a pool of blood. He was attempting to stop police violence against the villagers whose homes were being bulldozed by the company that received a long-term concessions from prime minister Hun Sen for development.

After the beating and the spread of terror on the villagers, the police mob left.

State violence against human rights defenders, members of the opposition, women, landowners is part of the government to bring silence, to spread fear and to preserve power.

MP Son Chhay and councilor Hing Sokhom visited Mr. Soung Sophoan at Calmette hospital. Sophoan was injured in his head and finger yesterday from violent act committed by Hun Sen regime while trying to stop the illegal destruction of people houses in Boeung Kak.

SRP MPs demand the government to immediately stop this criminal act against it's own people and those involved in the crime must be brought for justice.

Khmer Rouge style of killing used in Kratie violence against SRP

At 5am on 13 July 2008, Mr. Kim Pros, age 18, and Mr. That Paom, age 24, nephews of Mr. Khum Srouch, a Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) activist in Meas Kandal village, Sray Cha commune, Snuol district, Kratie province, were transporting rubber's sap by bicycle to sell them at Snoul market when a violent incident occurred. Mr. Suon Buna, the village militia chief, accompanied by 5 others in a red car, caught Mr. Kim Pros and Mr. That Paom. They ruthlessly used a sharp stem of palm tree to slit Mr. Pros' throat and then beat him, leaving his head swollen and his entire body bruised. This method of throat-cutting is a similar practice to those performed by the Khmer Rouge in the Killing Fields. In addition, Mr Paom was heavily injured, and his right arm was broken. The people in the village witnessed the incident and screamed for the perpetrators to stop. The perpetrators left the scene in cars and on motorbike. The village people took Mr. Pros and Mr. Paom to the referral hospital in Snuol district.

SRP members of Parliament condemn this violent act and request FBI to also help in investigating this case so that the responsible persons will be brought to justice as soon as possible.

Sam Rainsy: Children of Land Protesters Are Held Hostage by Kompong Cham Authorities

Because they could not arrest a villager targeted as the leader of a group of land protesters, the authorities of Kompong Cham province have arrested his two daughters.

The man, Lay Horn, 49, had successfully led 133 families in Kompong Cham province's Stung Trang district, to recover 431 hectares of land from Oknha Sim Vanna, a business tycoon who controls the State-owned Boeng Ket rubber plantation.

Lay Horn, a SRP member, had organized the protest since 2002. With other villagers, he had prevented Sim Vanna from cutting all the rubber trees on the contested land, which used to belong to the 133 families now living in Prey Kak commune and two neighboring communes. Thanks to the determination of the concerned villagers, they were eventually given back their land in February 2007. Lay Horn became very popular for his action in favor of his community and was elected a commune councilor for Prek Kak commune at the April 2007 local elections.

Since his election as commune councilor, Lay Horn has been the target for retribution from the CPP-controlled authorities who accuse him of… land grabbing. After many threats and other acts of intimidation, an arrest warrant was issued against him on July 17, 2007. Because he had fled his village and is now hiding in Phnom Penh, the authorities on November 10, 2007, arrested his two daughters Lay Srey Leap, 22, and Lay Srey Mom, 25, and the latter's 8-month old baby girl. The three are now detained at Kompong Cham city's prison.

The police told villagers: "We cannot get hold of the father, therefore we arrest the children."

Lay Horn and his wife can be interviewed at the SRP Headquarters in Phnom Penh this afternoon, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

Cambodian National Assembly delegation to visit Vietnam this month

SRP MP Son Chhay, who is also Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Committee No. 5 which is in charge of foreign affairs and information, said on Tuesday that a Cambodian NA delegation will visit Vietnam between 13-18 November, based on an invitation from the president the Vietnamese Assembly. Son Chhay told the Koh Santepheap newspaper that during its visit, the Cambodian NA delegation plans to pay a visit to Monk Tim Sakhorn, the former abbot of the Phnom Den pagoda who is currently jailed in Vietnam. Son Chhay indicated that the Cambodian NA delegation will consist of 8 members and 3 assistants, and it will leave Cambodia on 13 November to travel to Hanoi. Son Chhay said that the delegation which he will be leading will ask the Vietnamese counterpart to meet Khmer Krom monks who are living in Kampuchea Krom (South Vietnam), and in particular with Monk Tim Sakhorn. Son Chhay said that the visit was based on an agreement between Cambodia and Vietnam concluded in October 2007.

Thomico asks Funcinpec not to support the KRT

The prince also called on all political parties, such as the HRP and the SRP, to help ask for the shutdown of the KRT.

Officials from the Sam Rainsy Party in Battambang province plan to file charges in provincial court Saturday accusing a ruling party councilwoman of smashing an opposition supporter's head against the handle of a village well pump.

The charges say the assailant, Vun Savorn, was angered by the participation of the victim, Seoung Sung, over her participation in a road project and growing popularity in the area.

Seoung Sung has already written a letter describing the attack that has been issued to human rights organizations, said Dim Saroeun, the opposition party's Battambang legal representative.

The attack was politically motivated and full of "anger," he said, because Seoung Sung's popularity in the region was on the rise.

When a Korean-funded road project was completed, he said, Vun Savorn was incensed at Seoung Sung's participation.

Vun Savorn could not be reached for comment Friday.

"The conflict is a grudge," Seoung Sung told VOA Khmer. "I joined the [opposition] party and [Vun Savorn] insinuated that I support a miserable party. When I succeeded in this Korean road project, she was angry."

Vun Savorn claimed she had been a part of the project but was not being given credit for her efforts, Seoung Sung said.

Before she beat her head against the well pump handle, Vun Savorn said, "She wants my position," Seoung Sung said. "She said I wanted to show off for the gain of my party."
